वैदिक पंचांग के अनुसार पौष माह में कृष्ण पक्ष की अंतिम तिथि को पौष अमावस्या कहते हैं। धार्मिक मान्यता के अनुसार अमावस्या तिथि का बड़ा महत्व है। क्योंकि कई धार्मिक कार्य अमावस्या पर किये जाते हैं। पितरों की आत्मा की शांति के लिए इस दिन तर्पण व श्राद्ध किया जाता है। वहीं पितृ दोष और कालसर्प दोष से मुक्ति के लिए इस दिन उपवास रखा जाता है। पौष माह में सूर्यदेव की उपासना का विशेष महत्व है।

पौष अमावस्या व्रत और धार्मिक कर्मकांड
पौष का महीना धार्मिक और आध्यात्मिक चिंतन के लिए श्रेष्ठ माना जाता है। पौष मास की अमावस्या पर किये जाने वाले व्रत और धार्मिक कर्म इस प्रकार है:

1.  पौष अमावस्या पर पितरों को तर्पण करने का विशेष महत्व है। अत: इस दिन पवित्र नदी, जलाशय या कुंड आदि में स्नान करें और सूर्य देव को अर्घ्य देने के बाद पितरों का तर्पण करें।
2.  तांबे के पात्र में शुद्ध जल, लाल चंदन और लाल रंग के पुष्प डालकर सूर्य देव को अर्घ्य देना चाहिए।
3.  पितरों की आत्मा की शांति के लिए उपवास करें और किसी गरीब व्यक्ति को दान-दक्षिणा दें।
4.  जिन व्यक्तियों की कुंडली में पितृ दोष और संतान हीन योग उपस्थित है। उन्हें पौष अमावस्य का उपवास कर पितरों का तर्पण अवश्य करना चाहिए।
●  अमावस्या के दिन पीपल के पेड़ का पूजन करना चाहिए और तुलसी के पौधे की परिक्रमा करनी चाहिए।
●  मान्यता है कि पौष अमावस्या का व्रत करने से पितरों को शांति मिलती है और मनुष्य की समस्त मनोकामनाएं पूर्ण होती हैं।
पौष अमावस्या का महत्व
हिन्दू धर्म ग्रन्थों में पौष मास को बहुत ही पुण्य फलदायी बताया गया है। धार्मिक और आध्यात्मिक चिंतन-मनन के लिए यह माह श्रेष्ठ होता है। पौष अमावस्या पर पितरों की शांति के लिए उपवास रखने से न केवल पितृगण बल्कि ब्रह्मा, इंद्र, सूर्य, अग्नि, वायु, ऋषि, पशु-पक्षी समेत भूत प्राणी भी तृप्त होकर प्रसन्न होते हैं। पौष मास में होने वाले मौसम परिवर्तन के आधार पर आने वाले साल में होने वाली बारिश का अनुमान लगाया जा सकता है।

According to the Vedic calendar, the last date of Krishna Paksha in Paush month is called Pausha Amavasya. According to religious belief, Amavasya Tithi has great significance. Because many religious works are done on Amavasya. On this day, tarpan and shradh are performed for the peace of the ancestors. On this day fasting is observed to get rid of Pitru Dosh and Kalsarp Dosh. The worship of Suryadev in Paush month has special significance.

Paush Amavasya fast and religious rituals
The month of Paush is considered best for religious and spiritual thinking. The fasts and religious deeds performed on the new moon day of Pausha month are as follows:

1. It is of special importance to offer ancestors on Pausha Amavasya. Therefore, take a bath in a holy river, reservoir or pool etc. on this day and offer the ancestors after offering arghya to the sun god.
2. Arghya should be offered to the Sun god by putting pure water, red sandalwood and red flowers in a copper vessel.
3. Fast for the peace of the ancestors and give alms to any poor person.
4. Those whose horoscope has Pitra Dosha and progeny inferior yoga. They must fast the ancestors of Pausha Amavasya and offer the ancestors.
● On the day of Amavasya one should worship peepal tree and revolve around the basil plant.
● It is believed that fasting of Pausha Amavasya brings peace to the fathers and fulfills all the wishes of man.


Importance of Pausha Amavasya
In Hinduism texts, Paush month has been declared very virtuous. This month is best for religious and spiritual meditation. By keeping fast for the peace of the ancestors on Pausha Amavasya, not only the ancestors but also the ghosts including Brahma, Indra, Surya, Agni, Vayu, Rishi, animals and birds are satisfied. The rainfall in the coming year can be estimated based on the weather change occurring in Paush month.
