वैशाख का महीना हिन्दू वर्ष का दूसरा माह होता है। धार्मिक मान्यताओं के अनुसार इसी माह से त्रेता युग का आरंभ हुआ था। इस वजह से वैशाख अमावस्या का धार्मिक महत्व और भी बढ़ जाता है। दक्षिण भारत में वैशाख अमावस्या पर शनि जयंती मनाई जाती है। धर्म-कर्म, स्नान-दान और पितरों के तर्पण के लिये अमावस्या का दिन बहुत ही शुभ माना जाता है। काल सर्प दोष से मुक्ति पाने के लिये भी अमावस्या तिथि पर ज्योतिषीय उपाय किये जाते हैं।

वैशाख अमावस्या व्रत और धार्मिक कर्म

प्रत्येक अमावस्या पर पितरों की मोक्ष प्राप्ति के लिए व्रत अवश्य रखना चाहिए। वैशाख अमावस्या पर किये जाने वाले धार्मिक कर्म इस प्रकार हैं-

●  इस दिन नदी, जलाशय या कुंड आदि में स्नान करें और सूर्य देव को अर्घ्य देकर बहते हुए जल में तिल प्रवाहित करें।
●  पितरों की आत्मा की शांति के लिए तर्पण एवं उपवास करें और किसी गरीब व्यक्ति को दान-दक्षिणा दें।
●  वैशाख अमावस्या पर शनि जयंती भी मनाई जाती है, इसलिए शनि देव तिल, तेल और पुष्प आदि चढ़ाकर पूजन करनी चाहिए।
●  अमावस्या के दिन पीपल के पेड़ पर सुबह जल चढ़ाना चाहिए और संध्या के समय दीपक जलाना चाहिए।
●  निर्धन व्यक्ति या ब्राह्मण को भोजन और यथाशक्ति वस्त्र और अन्न का दान करना चाहिए।

पौराणिक कथा

वैशाख अमावस्या के महत्व से जुड़ी एक कथा पौराणिक ग्रंथों में मिलती है। प्राचीन काल में धर्मवर्ण नाम के एक ब्राह्मण हुआ करते थे। वे बहुत ही धार्मिक और ऋषि-मुनियों का आदर करने वाले व्यक्ति थे। एक बार उन्होंने किसी महात्मा के मुख से सुना कि कलियुग में भगवान विष्णु के नाम स्मरण से ज्यादा पुण्य किसी भी कार्य में नहीं है। धर्मवर्ण ने इस बात को आत्मसात कर लिया और सांसारिक जीवन छोड़कर संन्यास लेकर भ्रमण करने लगा। एक दिन घूमते हुए वह पितृलोक पहुंचा। वहां धर्मवर्ण के पितर बहुत कष्ट में थे। पितरों ने उसे बताया कि उनकी ऐसी हालत तुम्हारे संन्यास के कारण हुई है। क्योंकि अब उनके लिये पिंडदान करने वाला कोई शेष नहीं है। यदि तुम वापस जाकर गृहस्थ जीवन की शुरुआत करो, संतान उत्पन्न करो तो हमें राहत मिल सकती है। साथ ही वैशाख अमावस्या के दिन विधि-विधान से पिंडदान करो। धर्मवर्ण ने उन्हें वचन दिया कि वह उनकी अपेक्षाओं को अवश्य पूर्ण करेगा। इसके बाद धर्मवर्ण ने संन्यासी जीवन छोड़कर पुनः सांसारिक जीवन को अपनाया और वैशाख अमावस्या पर विधि विधान से पिंडदान कर अपने पितरों को मुक्ति दिलाई।

Vaishakh Amavasya fast and religious deeds

A fast must be observed on every Amavasya for the salvation of the ancestors. Religious deeds performed on Vaishakh Amavasya are as follows:

● On this day, bathe in a river, reservoir or pool, and offer arghya to the Sun God and flow sesame into the flowing water.
● For the peace of the souls of the ancestors, perform tarpan and fast and give alms and donations to a poor person.
● Shani Jayanti is also celebrated on Vaisakha Amavasya, hence Shani Dev should be worshiped by offering sesame, oil and flowers etc.
● On the day of Amavasya, water should be offered to the Peepal tree in the morning and lamps should be lit in the evening.
● A poor person or a Brahmin should donate food and as much power as possible and food.

mythology

A story related to the importance of Vaishakh Amavasya is found in mythological texts. In ancient times there used to be a Brahmin named Dharmavarna. He was a very religious and respected person of sages. Once he heard from the mouth of a Mahatma that in the Kali Yuga, nothing is more virtuous than remembrance of the name of Lord Vishnu. Dharmavarna assimilated this and left the worldly life and started traveling with renunciation. One day while wandering, he reached Pitralok. Dharmavarna's ancestors were in a lot of trouble there. The fathers told him that his condition was due to your retirement. Because there is no one left to donate them now. If you go back and start a householder life, produce children, then we can get relief. Also, do pinddaan on the day of Vaishakh Amavasya by law. Dharmavarna promised him that he would fulfill his expectations. After this, Dharmavarna renounced his worldly life and re-embraced worldly life and liberated his fathers by worshiping him on the Vaishakh Amavasya by law.
